Raising Dough: The Raphael House San Francisco

5 May

Phew…the roller coaster is slowing down with fewer jolts and free falls, though it will never come to a stop (I hope).  I can only hope that one day it will be more of a ferris wheel than a roller coaster – one that never stops, but is an enjoyable ride with lots of sites and memorable moments.  We’ve had sites and memorable moments in our first four weeks, of course, but the lack of sleep and the lack of other scenery has made it all a blur.

{day dreaming about the upcoming ferris wheel ride…which would be even nicer with mini donuts and funnel cake in hand!}

What’s great is that we’re getting into a groove.  And with that groove we can pay attention to some of the things that we’ve been neglecting, like our monthly philanthropic pick.  Each month we are “raising dough” for a chosen neighborhood cause.  As you may have seen, we are featuring the organization on our community board, complete with a donation box, so that you can be involved too.  We’re matching up to $250 per month.  We’ll also plan a volunteer event at the organization so we can put our hands where our money is.

Our box full of dough thanks to you!

Drum roll please….Our chosen May organization is the Raphael House Family Shelter just around the corner from the bakery, with a fantastic mission.

The Raphael House is a privately funded family shelter and services program located at 1065 Sutter Street between Hyde and Larkin. Their mission is to help at-risk children and their parents achieve stable housing and financial independence while strengthening family bonds and personal dignity. Since 1971, Raphael House has helped more than 19,000 children and parents break the cycle of homelessness and move toward brighter futures. You can read more or their website and follow them on twitter.  Be sure to check out the ways that you can get involved.

This coming Thursday, May 9th, we are volunteering at the Raphael House in their Chef program.  I’ve done it a number of times and it is always a lot of fun.  We have six spots to fill from 3:30pm to 7pm.  We’ll be cooking dinner and then serving it to the residents.  We still have spaces, so email info@flourandco.com if you are interested in joining us!

Have a great week!
