Raising Dough: Project Open Hand

17 Oct

Last month, our Raising Dough campaign was centered around the national ‘No Kid Hungry’ campaign by Share Our Strength.  How can we not feed a child that isn’t provided with the food that he or she needs at home??  It’s hard to imagine being in the shoes of these children…such a basic need that many of us never had to think about.  So, thank you for supporting children everywhere by contributing $86 during the month of September!  We tripled your donations for a total offering of $258 to Share our Strength.

In October, we are Raising Dough for a neighborhood organization, Project Open Hand.  Project Open Hand provides “meals with love” to the elderly and the critically ill.  In fact, they provide about 2500 nutritious meals a day, as well as healthy groceries to these people in need.  Project Open Hand started in San Francisco by Ruth Brinker who was seeing friends with HIV/AIDS suffer from malnutrition.  Her goal was simply to provide healthy meals, along with her love and support, to her friends who were ill.  Her simple goal from the heart has turned into a lifeline for many people in need in the Bay Area.  The organization has expanded and continues to prosper with the help of employees and over 100 volunteers each day.

We had the privilege of volunteering this week at Project Open Hand, as we do each month at our chosen charity.  We worked in the kitchen chopping onions and carrots and visited with the regular Tuesday volunteers.  With the exception of some tears (from the onions of course!), we had some laughs, honed our knife skills, and enjoyed the relaxing repetition of chopping for a good cause.  If we only had more time, we’d be back every week!  Oh — and, did I mention the complimentary outfits we got just for showing up?!?  If I didn’t already sell you on volunteering, this picture will surely do the trick!
