The Bakery Life: Flour & Co….Berkeley???

3 Feb

We’ve been keeping some exciting news under wraps.  The saying ‘Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched’ is an appropriate explanation for our behavior.  So many things can happen between the time you spot your dream space and signing the lease on the dotted line.  Nine times out of ten, it never gets off the ground, or worse, takes a plunge into the deep end part way through.  We had a tear-laden free fall into the deep end before we signed and sealed this one.  Thank goodness everything happens for a reason because we ended up with the perfect spot!

Flour & Co Berkeley…here we come!  1398 University Avenue is the exact location.  Formerly a bakery, we’re lucky to have very little work to do in the BIG kitchen (yay!!).  And, don’t fret, we’ll still be baking each morning on Hyde Street (and in Berkeley).  The larger kitchen in Berkeley will allow us to do more playing (we love testing…and tasting), bring in more than a 10# bag of sugar at a time (that’s only a slight exaggeration), and delve into things we’ve not been able to do in the name of spatial limitations.

The retail space, on the other hand, needs a total overhaul.  Thank you to Abueg Morris Architects (again) for doing their magic! Gosh, we love working with them!!! Take a peek at their gorge sketches!

Besides the big kitchen, we’re also really excited to be a part of the North Berkeley neighborhood.  Keith and Marites at Abueg Morris, as well as my sister (yay!) lives right in the hood.  We’re looking forward to sharing our progress as we go along and meeting our other neighbors.  Follow this blog for the details as they happen!

Now that we’re getting closer to June, any updates on when you might be opening? My wife and I live 3 blocks from your new location and are excited to welcome you to the neighborhood.

We’re hoping for an August opening. Just a couple weeks away from the building permits (cross your fingers)!

        Fingers firmly crossed! 😀
